Named for the crocodile skin pattern on its straplike fronds, this tough fern is easy to grow in humid environments in bright, filtered light. Light to medium green fronds of varying width are patterned with distinctive dark green veining. The upright arching fronds form a dense clump with new leaves arising from a rhizome that is just under the soil surface. Like most tropical ferns, it is epiphytic but will also grow in potting soil. In the wild, this fern can grow quite large at 3-5' across. It stays much smaller when grown indoors. Other common names include 'Alligator Fern'. |
